UK Tax Return for Overseas Income Tax UK
UK Tax Return for overseas income due to be taxed in the UK is filed with HMRC every year as part of self-assessment.
You need to file a UK tax return because you became resident in the UK, continue to receive overseas income to be taxed in the UK or need to apply for UK tax refund if you overpaid UK tax.
Here we focus on how to submit UK tax returns for individuals in the UK.
What is a UK Tax Return?
In the UK, both individuals and businesses are required to submit their UK tax returns to HMRC. A tax return is a specific form where you declare your personal and business income.
By submitting your UK tax returns, you also claim any UK tax refunds that may be due to you.
UK income tax is calculated for self-employed and sole traders. Legal entities submit their UK corporate tax returns.
If your tax return is simple, you can submit your UK tax return yourself online or in a paper form.
However, it is easy to make mistakes and therefore, employing or seeking professional help from a UK accountant to help you prepare, calculate and file your UK tax return is advisable.
Even more so, you gain someone qualified and competent you can trust who can represent you and your UK tax matters before the HMRC.
What is Self-Assessment?
Self-assessment means you self declare your untaxed income and gains to HMRC.
HMRC (His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs) operates self assessment system, which collects income and gains that were not taxed as part of your employment or you are self employed.
Important Step – You Need to Register for UK Self Assessment
You need to register for UK taxes to be able to file your UK tax return.
If you are a new arrival to the UK. You will need to apply for:
- NINO - National Insurance Number
- UTR – Unique Tax Reference
If you have been in the UK for a while and have your national insurance number, you will only need to apply for UTR.
You may have lived in the UK previously and may be returning to the UK from the overseas, you may still have your old national insurance number.
It is advisable to apply for NINO and UTR if you do not have them already as soon as you arrive to the UK, so that you can submit and file your UK tax returns in a timely manner.
Who Needs to File a UK Tax Return?
You need to file your UK tax return when:
- You receive a letter from HMRC ( you will receive it once you are registered with HMRC)
- You receive additional income and gains that are outside of your employment
- You receive overseas income and gains
- Historically, you want to claim your UK non-domiciled status
- You want to benefit from some of the UK tax exemptions as the new arrival to the UK

UK Tax Filing: Paper or Online?
True, HMRC operates free HMRC tax return software. However, the software is very basic and may not appropriately cater for international clients or new arrivals to the UK.
The forms that need to be included are not present within free HMRC tax return software.
There are the commercial versions of UK tax return software that may be useful.
However, the risk also is that the software is not necessarily sufficiently updated following recent and continued UK tax changes, especially as it relates to the international clients and new arrivals to the UK.
The paper UK tax return may be sufficiently tailored to suit individual client needs. However, you need to retain the relevant submission proof if HMRC misplaces it or loses it.
The individual client circumstances will dictate what is required, how much detail needs to be present and addressed.
